<div style="color: #990000; font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">TIPS AND HINTS:
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">• Every few rows count the number of beads in a round. If your bead count is off, either skip a stitch or increase a stitch to get back to 5 stitches per row.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">• The bead you go under should be horizontal.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">• Once a bead from a previous row has been crocheted it will look more vertical.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">• At first, the piece will look flat; use the end of a knitting needle or pencil to push the center down and shape it into a tube.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">• The thickness of the tube will vary from thin to thick depending on the size of the beads.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">• If you need more beads, cut the wire leaving a (15 mm) tail, string on more beads and begin crocheting again working over the tails and weaving them in securely. You can also tie a knot in the two ends of the wire.
<div style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">
1-Cut an 18-inch length of ribbon for the flower. Place the ribbon on the glass mat and pre-heat the textile tool with the tapered point attached. Hold the ribbon with your non-dominant hand as you melt and cut the ribbon with the tool. The heat of the tool melts the ribbon, which seals the fibers as it cuts. Cut a soft wave pattern along the length of the ribbon, as shown. This particular ribbon is wide enough to make two flowers (one with each half of the ribbon). Taper off at the end to avoid a squared off edge.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">2- With a doubled thread knotted at the end, sew a long basting stitch about 0.25 inch from the straight edge of the ribbon. Pull basting thread to evenly gather the ribbon.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">3- Starting at one end of the ribbon, coil the ribbon tightly into a circle and tack with the needle and thread. Working on the wrong (back) side, spiral (or coil) the ribbon, tacking the ribbon as you go. Each rotation will overlap the last slightly to build the flower shape.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">4- Adjust the gathers as you go, stitching the ribbon in place as you coil to the end of the ribbon. when the entire length of ribbon is coiled, knot and clip the thread ends.
<div style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;">5- Use floral wire to gather and wrap around purchased artificial stamens for the flower center. knotted letterforms adorn this pincushion and needle case set in toning colors. On the needle case, the initial is worked in peach on a white background; on the pincushion, the pale peach letter on a darker background gives a more subtle effect.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">MATERIALS
• One needle case made for cross-stitching in white Aida, 14 hpi
• One piece of peach Aida, 14 hpi, 6 in (15 cm) square
• Stranded embroidery floss in the colors given in the key
• Fine tapestry needle
• Circular pincushion base with 4 in (10 cm) diameter cushion

<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">WORKING THE DESIGN
1 Press the peach fabric and the needle case. Fold the fabric in half lengthwise and press gently. Then fold in half across the width and press. Make a dot in water-soluble pen where the folds cross to mark the center of the fabric. Do the same with the needle case front (ignore the fact that two of the corners are rounded).
2 Choose the initials that you want to use from the charts on the following pages. On each initial you choose. find the center square and mark it with a pen dot; this will correspond to the dot you have marked on the fabric.
3 Using two strands of pale peach floss, follow the chart for your chosen letter to stitch the design onto the peach fabric for the pincushion. Using two strands of peach, stitch your chosen initial onto the front of the needle case.
4 Using one strand of dark orange, work backstitch around the edges of each letter and across the knotted part of each letter as marked on the charts.
5 Sponge away the marks made by the water-soluble pen. When the embroidered pieces are completely dry, press them from the back .
6 Assemble the pincushion according to the manufacturer's instructions. This generally requires unscrewing the padded area from the base, stretching the embroidery over the pad (making sure that it is positioned in the center), gluing or taping the fabric in place underneath the pad, and reassembling the pincushion.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">PRACTICAL TIP
The center point of each letter is not always in the center of the knot, so make sure you measure and mark it correctly for each different initial that you work.

<span style="font-family: "Verdana",sans-serif;">VARIATIONS
The whole alphabet is included in the charts, so you can personalize anything appropriate or put several letters together to make a monogram. Because these letters are so ornate, they tend not to work very well together for spelling out names, but they look effective worked into a sampler design.
