Three cubes of fire-resistant furniture foam, 4x 4in (10 x 10cm) - or, if you have very loose tension, have your foam cut after you have knitted your pieces for a perfect fit. Any good foam supplier should be able to cut you a piece to order.
Cast on 20 sts.
Work in garter stitch for 28 rows or until your work measures 4in (10cm).
Make six squares for each cube (two squares of each colour).
Trace or photocopy the felt letter templates opposite. Cut the letters out and pin to felt. Cut around the felt.
Templates for ABC blocks (shown at actual size)
Pin your knitted squares to your foam cube. Sew up using mattress stitch. Weave in your ends. Using straight stitch, sew your felt letters to your cube with a thread that matches the colour of your felt.
For more interactive ABC blocks, cut a slit in the foam and insert a bell or a toy squeaker.
