Sweater Bag


 size
Approx 11" (28cm) tall x 18" (46cm) wide (at widest point), 8" (20cm) wide (at top), without handle

3 skeins (3.5 oz/121 yd/100 g per skein) any #5 bulky yarn

Used in this project: 
Patons Shetland Chunky 75% acrylic/25% wool yarn in Taupe (Substitute: Bernat Softee Chunky, Moda Dea Tweedle Dee or Patons Rumor)
Sizes J/10 (6mm) and G/6 (4mm) crochet hooks
1 brown purse handle with metal rings at ends, any size; handle shown is approx 13" (33cm) when folded
Yarn needle


gauge 
With G hook, 10 sc and 9 sc rows = 2" (5cm)
With J hook, 10 dc and 6 dc rows (at widest point) = 3" (8cm)

 ch, sc, dc

pattern notes
This purse is worked in one piece, folded and seamed up on each side. The narrow top edge is folded over, and then the handle is attached. 



instructions
All sts are worked in the blo.

With G hook. ch 22; change to J hook and ch 60; change to G hook and ch 23— 105 chs.

Row 1: (RS) With G hook, sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in next 21 chs; change to J hook and dc in next 60 chs: change to G hook and sc in rem 22 chs; turn — 104 sts (22 Sc, 60 dc, 22 se) on same row.

Row 2: With G hook, ch 1, sc in blo of first 22 sc: change to J hook and dc in blo of next 60 dc: change to G hook and sc in blo of next 22 sc; turn — 104 sts.

Rows 3-37: Rep Row 2, 35 times more, or for desired width of bag/purse. End off after last row. Fold piece in half with sc sections at top and WS tog. Match up sts on each side and pin in place. Sew side seams and weave in ends.

Note: For a wider or more open neck on the purse, work the sc on each end with a hook larger than size G. Change back to size J hook for dc in center of rows.

Fold top edge over to RS and tack down. Attach handles to inside-top side seams.

getting a handle on it
If you have trouble finding purse handles you like, recycle handles from an old purse you already have or visit a thrift store, where you'll find a variety of purses for a very reasonable price which you can remove the handles from.
