Floral Knitted Brooch

THIS PROJECT USES A FLUTED KNITTING technique and chenille yarn in three rich shades of red. The knitted pieces are sewn together to form a round, frilly flower. The pattern will work with any sport-weight yarn, with varying results depending on the yarn you choose. You can also knit the corsage in some of the novelty yarns available. Attaching a barrette or hair clip instead of a brooch back will turn the flower into a pretty hair accessory.

MATERIALS
  • Approximately 5g of sport-weight chenille yarn in each of three colors, depending on the thickness and quality of the yarn
  • Polyester sewing thread in a matching color
  • Brooch back finding .
EQUIPMENT
  •  Knitting needles in the size recommended on the yarn wrapper
  •  Tapestry or large-eyed needle
  •  Hand-sewing needle
  •  Small, sharp embroidery scissors
1 Using one color of yarn, work the following knitting pattern.

Cast on 100 stitches.
Knit 8 rows.
Row 9: Knit two stitches together, repeat this 49 more times. (50 stitches left on needle.)
Knit 1 row.
Row 11: Knit two stitches together. repeat this 24 more times. (25 stitches left on needle.)
Knit 1 row.
Row 13: Knit two stitches together, repeat this 11 more times. knit 1 stitch. (13 stitches left on needle.)
Knit 1 row.
Row 15: Knit two stitches together, repeat this 5 more times, knit 1 stitch. (7 stitches left on needle.)
Knit 1 row.
Cast off.

2 Repeat the pattern given in Step 1 with the other two colors of chenille yarn, so that you have three knitted pieces.

3 Use the tapestry needle to sew in the ends of yarn so that they are hidden along the edges of the knitting.

4 Place all three pieces of knitting together, aligning the short (bottom) edges. Using the hand-sewing needle and polyester sewing thread, oversew these edges together.

5 Turn each end of the stitched-together strips in opposite directions so that they lie flat against the underside of the flower. Stitch to the main body of the flower, again using overstitch.

6 Using the hand-sewing needle and polyester sewing thread, sew the brooch back finding to the back of the flower, slightly above the center.
