Beaded Roses Topiary

Materials
• Roses
 • Rose leaves
• Pillar candle holder : or 6" dia. cake stand
 • Cone-shaped foam topiary form, 4" x 12"
 • Acrylic paint: forest green (2 oz.)
 • Nonhardening clay (small lump)
 • 6" wooden skewer

Tools
 • Paintbrush

•I like the candleholder it has a cup for the candle, which I can fill with nonhardening clay to help support the topiary form.

NOTE
if necessary prepare the candleholder. I found these pillar candleholders with beaded decorations in a discount store. 1 decided that it would make a great stand for the topiary, but I didn't want the beads. So, I simply cut them off and saved them for another use.

Preparing the Topiary form.

1-Paint the topiary form with green paint to hide any spaces that may appear around the roses. (Photo 2)
 2. Set up the topiary stand. Insert a wooden skewer into the bottom of the topiary form at the center point. Leave enough skewer sticking out that will fit into the candleholder indentation. (Photo 3)

3. Fill the indentation with the clay and insert the skewer into the center of the clay. Push the form down so it is flush with the candleholder top. (Photo 4)

NOTE
If using a cake stand, cut an indentation in the bottom of the topiary form so the lump of clay will fit Inside it. When the form sits on top of the cake stand, be certain the bottom of the form is flush with the top of the cake stand Place the lump of clay in the center of the stand, insert the skewer into the lump of clay, and press the form down so that it is flush with the top of the cake stand.

Making the Roses

1- Make roses as follows:
 a. Make 16 roses with garnet, size 9° three-cut beads. Make each rose on one piece of 16-gauge wire. Cut the stem wire to 4". Do not curve the top of the roses on the stem wire. Make the sepals for the roses, but do not make the branches of leaves.
 b. Make 16 roses with ruby, size 9° three-cut beads. Make each rose on one piece of 16-gauge wire. Cut the stem wire to 4". Do not curve the top of the roses on the stem wire. Make the sepals for the roses, but do not make the branches of leaves.
 c. Make six rosebuds with garnet, size 9° three-cut beads. Make each rosebud on one piece of 16-gauge wire. Cut the stem wire to 4". Do not curve the top of the rosebuds on the wire. Make the sepals for the rose-buds, but do not make the branches of leaves.
d. Make six rosebuds with ruby, size 9° three-cut beads. Make each rose-bud on one piece of 16- gauge wire. Cut the wire to 4". Do not curve the top of the rosebuds on the wire. Make the sepals for the rosebuds, but do not make the branches of leaves.
 e. To make one rosebud, use only the five largest petals. Take one petal and roll it to form the center of the rosebud. Add the remaining petals and the sepals to form the complete rosebud. (Photos 5 & 6)

NOTE
Making a bud with the largest petals, rather than the smaller inner petals will result in a rosebud that more realistically resembles the flower just before the petals begin to open.
2. Insert the roses into the topiary form. Start at the bottom of the Form. Place the roses close together to minimize the spaces. Alternate the colors between the garnet and the ruby roses. if necessary, trim the stem wires before inserting them into the form.
Note: As you move up the topiary form, the cone is less than 4" in diameter .It will then be necessary to trim the stems to avoid having them pierce through the other side of the cone  (Photo 7)
 3. Continue adding roses row by row, moving up the cone. Intersperse some buds in between the full roses. Save five buds for the very top of the topiary. At the top, place one bud at the center of the cone. Place the remaining four buds on alternate sides just below the center bud. (Photo 8)

Making the Leaves
Pattern: Make 24
Basic 6, 15 rows, RBPT
Trim so three long wires extend
 Lace all leaves

Finishing the Topiary
 I. Insert the leaves into the spaces between the roses and the buds. Use as many or as few leaves as desired. (Photo 9)
 2. Press the stems into the topiary so only the leaf tips are seen through the roses.
