Puffs Baby Blanket

In the 1930s there was a craze for making a decorative patchwork from gathered circles of fabric, called Suffolk puffs or yo-yos. This pretty baby blanket echoes that style with ingeniously constructed, double ' thickness, two-round crochet puffs in pastel shades.

SIZE
(54 x 63cm)
YOU WILL NEED
Approximately:
35g of pure wool or wool rich 4ply yarn in pink.
60g same in each of green and blue
45g same in each of mauve, lilac and yellow
50g same in turquoise
4.50mm (US G/6) and 2.50mm (US C/2) crochet hooks

TENSION
Each puff measures approxirnately 4.5cm ) across, using 4.50mm (US G/6) hook. Change -hook size, if necessary, to obtain this size puff.

NOTES
• you can vary the amount of puffs you make in each colour as you wish or invent your own colour scheme but for the effect in the picture you'll need to make 17 puffs in pink, 31 in green, 30 in blue, 22 in mauve, 22 in lilac, 25 in turquoise and 21 in yellow.
-The puffs are worked using a larger hook than usual for 4ply yarn so that the double thickness motifs are lightweight.
-The decreases on the second round fold  naturally to the wrong side.

 for a larger blanket :-
Simply make more puffs and assemble them to the size you want. To help estimate the amount of yarn you'll need, allow acoroximately 20g for each extra 10 puffs.

1st line of puffs: Using 2.50mm (US C/2) hook and with WS facing, join appropriate colour yarn in a trtr of first puff. With RS together, hold 2nd puff behind.
Joining row: Inserting hook in same trtr as join and in corresponding trtr of 2nd puff together, work 1dc,(1ch, 1dc in next trtr of each motif together) twice. Fasten off.
Leaving 7trtr at each side free, join 3trtr of 2nd puff to 3rd puff. Continue joining puffs in this way until 12 puffs have been joined.
2nd line of puffs: Count 5trtr back from join in 1st puff and join first 3 of these 5trtr to13th puff in the same way. leaving 2trtr between joins each time, join 14th puff to 13th and 2nd puffs. Continue joining puffs in this way until 14 lines of puffs have been completed.
